So, I finally finished the robotic cat feeder.
Background: We have two cats. Slope, a 17 year old with the beginnings of kidney disease, needs a low protein diet. Dot, a kitten, needs a high protein diet. Incompatible. Technology to the rescue!
I built a contraption (out of acrylic, for easy cleaning) that can hold a bowl of food. A rotating disk acts as a door.
The motor on the disk is hooked up to a phidget motor controller, and a phidgets RFID reader is placed beneath the food bowls. RFID tags are put on both cat's collars.
With a bit of really crappy code, the magic is complete. When Dot walks up to Slope's food, it detects her RFID and closes down. 15 seconds later, it slides open again.
Yay technology!
When I find the battery charger for my camera I'll take pictures and video and put 'em up for all to see.
Good times!

Re: Latest project: RFID-based cat feeder
Tue, September 30, 2008 - 10:40 PMNo, but I will soon. The problem is that, it being mainly clear acrylic, it's hard to photograph. But a friend of mine who is a professional product photographer will be taking pictures soon.
Additionally, I'll be building a second one Real Soon Now (one for the other cat) and documenting the construction process for instructables, and I'm writing a set of sevices to control them using Microsoft Rbootics Studio (which, I might add, is pretty rad).
